Are you prowling for the latest and greatest lip products. Do you want something natural that won’t make your lips cover in fear? I just may have your answer.
Bite Beauty is a brand that has been on my radar for a while, but that I never had a serious urge to them out. Until now.
I’ve been having some serious lip problems as of late. And since the weather is rapidly turning from chilly to downright cold, I’m guessing many of you are also on the hunt for some new lip products that look great and moisturize at the same time. Isn’t that the dream?
After hearing that Bite Beauty supposedly uses all food-grade ingredients in their lip products, and quite honestly, getting sucked in by the cuteness of that little red tin, I set off on my adventure of testing my first Bite Beauty lip products.
Ready to see if I think these Bite Lip Crayons will be your lips’ saving grace this winter?
All the basics on Bite Lip Crayons
As of this posting, Bite Beauty products are sold exclusively at Sephora. Each full size crayon contain 0.05 oz of product, and costs $24.00. That’s not cheap. But I suppose it’s worth it when you consider how much healthier these are than other lip products. (Allegedly- I have not confirmed the health/safely of each ingredient individually.)
Currently, the line includes 19 shades, including a totally white shade that I assume is intended for lightening deeper colors.

The formula may or may not be what you’re expecting
As you can see in the swatches below, the Bite Lip Crayons formula is very creamy, which is both a good and bad thing.
These claim to dry to a matte finish. Although everybody’s idea of what is “matte” may be different, I don’t feel like these are completely matte. When dried, I find the finish similar to that of the L’Oréal Pro-Matte Gloss. It looks generally matte from a far, but up close a slight sheen is very visible.
Bite Lip Crayons are matte in the sense that they don’t have any sparkle or shimmer in the formula, but then don’t dry to a completely flat finish like some other lipsticks do.
I regularly use Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick as a reference in my brain, because those are some of the driest, most matte lipsticks ever. Perhaps that is not a fair comparison, but that is what I think of when I hear the word “matte.”And These lip crayons are definitely not it.

They’re quite soft and delicate
Looking closely at the photo above of the lip crayon line-up, you can probably tell that the tip of Aubergine (the purple shade) is damaged.
I took the photo before swatching the colors or applying them to my lips to show you the untangled tips straight out of the package. However, the caps on these hang on very tightly, making them difficult to remove. I pried them as gently as possible as to not hit the product, but in my struggle the cap did make contact with the tip of Aubergine.
With most lipsticks, the amount of force with which I hit the product would probably leave a dent. That’s understandable. But in this case, the entire point toppled off.
I smushed it back into place for the photo. This just goes to show just how soft these sticks are. When I apply the product to my lips, I’m very careful to not use too much pressure because I can feel the tip of the crayon giving way.
This went away after the tip rounded out, (after about 2 applications,) but just be careful the first few times you use them. They are very fragile.
Comfortable to wear, though slightly drying
The plus side of this is that the Bite Beauty Lip Crayon is very comfortable on the lips. The formula doesn’t feel sticky at all, and they leave a nice creaminess on your lips. They feel quite moisturizing for a while.
Unfortunately, I find that after wearing the product for several hours, it does begin drying out my lips. It’s not a problem if you keep reapplying, but I find that my lips tend to shrivel up if I allow the creaminess to wear away without removing the pigments as well.
Also, I don’t consider the Bite Lip Crayons at all long wearing. As alluded above, I reapplied multiple times to keep my lips from dehydrating. During the time that I wore these, I didn’t eat or drink anything. When I did eat, the color transferred right onto my sandwich and really didn’t stand much of a chance. I also left a pretty defined lipstick ring on my straw, so this product is definitely not lunch proof.
An annoying packaging quirk
I’ll just say it- I don’t like the packaging. It’s nice that the product is slim and compact, and easy to carry, but that’s where the positives end.
The exterior packaging is completely gray every shade. The shade name printed on a teeny-tiny sticker on the bottom of the tube. I don’t have the greatest eyesight and it takes me some effort to focus my eyes enough to read the name. I’m sure some other people have much worse eyesight than me, so I can only imagine what it would be like for them.
You can forget about having these beautifully laid out where you can instantly zero in on the color you want. Unless you have the order memorized, you’re in for some lipstick-fishing when when searching for a specific color.
So do I recommend Bite Lip Crayons?
Overall, I think the Bite Beauty Lip Crayons are are pretty good products. Yes, they are delicate and maybe not as matte as matte gets, but I am still relatively happy with how they wear.
I don’t consider transferring and wearing off while eating major cons, as it just comes with the territory of wearing lipstick.
For me, these are great for when I”m running out for a quick errand, and I just want something quick and small that I can throw in my purse for on-the-go touch ups. I actually reach for these quite often.
Bite Beauty Best Bite Rewind Set
I always get sucked in my cute packaging. Always. This set of four mini lip crayons comes encased in a little red tin with a festive cardboard overlay.
I have a thing for containers. If we had The Container Store here in Hawaii, I’d be all up in that place, but alas, we don’t. So collecting cute tins and wrapping-paper-covered shoeboxes is the next best thing.
This particular case is about the size of an iPhone 4, and is slightly less than 1 inch thick. I opened it expecting it to be just a plain container, but I was surprised, (and thrilled,) to see that the lid is filled with a beautiful, high-quality mirror. Score! Because of this, I can totally see this as a little travel companion in the coming weeks.

The actual lip crayons come wrapped in the tissue seen above. The tissue feels very heavy duty and has a waxy finish. Not that it really matters, but I feel like little details like this show the attention to detail that brands put into their products, which I appreciate.
Beautiful, wearable color selection
The set includes four colors (from left to right,): Cafe, Torte, Coulis, and Aubergine.
Isn’t it annoying when you buy a selection of the same product expecting them to all be the same quality, but instead some are good, some are not so good, and some just completely suck? That is definitely not the case here. I find that all four colors are all equally pigmented, they have the same texture, the same finish on the lips, and the same quirky faults. (As discussed above.)
Cafe
Cafe is a nude pink color with a a peachy base. Since the undertone is neutral to warm, I can get away with wearing this color on my yellow-based skin without looking sickly.
Torte
Torte is a perfect rosy nude, like a “your lips but better,” kind of color. In my opinion this is the most natural color in the set. Although we think of “nude” as being natural, the fact is that our lips tend to be more rosy pink than beige-pink.
Coulis
Coulis is a bright blue-based red that is perfect for spicing up your holiday makeup looks. I don’t know what else to say about it. It’s just a beautiful red.
Aubergine
Aubergine is berry color that walks a fine line between being berry and being purple. It depends on what kind of environment you are in that determines if this color is appropriate or not. I feel like it strikes a balance that makes the edgy wearable.
Maybe I’m just weird, but I wouldn’t have any problems wearing this color to church with my grandparents, which is tends to be my standard of appropriateness. For instance, as much as I love Anastasia Liquid Lipstick in Paint, (the blue one,) I wouldn’t wear that around my grandparents, yet I would wear Aubergine.

Update — Bite Beauty Best Bite Redux Set
This year, Bite has come out with a very similar set for the holidays! The four Bite Lip Crayons come packaged in an identical red tin case, the only difference being that the trim is gold this year instead of silver.
Everything that I said about last year’s set still applies this year. I enjoy the packaging, and I think the mini lip crayons are precious. This year’s shades include Truffle, Orchid, Red Velvet, and Fraise. The formula feels exactly the same as the permanent Bite Lip Crayons, and they swatch just like the colors in the photo above.
Overall, this year’s set screams “Holiday!” much more than last year’s did. While last year Bite opted to create a more wearable, everyday collection, this year it’s all party! Since this is a holiday set, I appreciate that.
