Today’s product is a true example of the Youtube Made Me Buy It phenomenon.
The Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer has been suuuper hyped up on Youtube lately. The multiple glowing reviews coming from beauty vloggers who I have watched for years don’t hold back at all.
So when I saw the best of the best, including Jaclyn Hill, Tati, MakeupByTiffanyD, and PatrickStarrr all raving about this new, yet-to-be-released concealer, I had to get in on it!
Read on to see how my first impressions test went, and my overall thoughts on the MUFE Ultra HD Concealer!
MUFE Ultra HD Concealer’s sad shade range
The MUFE Ultra HD Concealer ($27.00 USD) launched in early January 2016, and features an initial 10 shade range. The range is divided into two ranges, the “R” range, and the “Y” range. The “R” shades are intended as color correctors, while the “Y” shades are your usual concealers. For best results, MUFE suggests you use them in pairs, one “R” and one “Y.”
So essentially, you’ve got 5 “shades” to choose from, none of which go any deeper than your average spray tan. This is not good news for women of color, who you know, like to wear makeup too. I really don’t understand it when makeup companies essentially bring out half of the rainbow.
*UPDATE 10/17/16: MUFE has released, get this, one more shade to round out the deep end of the spectrum. The line now includes six concealer shades, along with the original five color correcting shades. Good going, MUFE. (Okay, done rolling my eyes now.)
*UPDATE 1/27/17: The range now includes 7 R shades and 6 Y shades. I suppose that’s better, but it’s nothing compared to spectrums such as the Sephora Collection Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer, which I love. If you have a hard time finding concealer shades that suit you perfectly, I definitely recommend checking those out.

The shade I chose = fail
I already have a color correcting concealer that I adore, plus I wasn’t willing to shell out $54 on two concealers that I may not like.
I purchased shade Y23 in the MUFE Ultra HD Concealer, the second lightest concealer shade offered. Out of all the options, this best fit my skin description on the Sephora website- “Light to Medium skin tones.” Even without testing the product in-store, I figured this would work because a) I identify as light-medium, and b) I typically choose the second lightest shade for concealers.
Seriously, Y23 is very light for what I’d consider a proper light-medium concealer shade. It looks nice as a super dramatic highlight, don’t get me wrong. Sometimes I want that. But for every day use, when I only dab the concealer in my under eye area, (no cheek triangles or forehead-nose-chin highlight,) it’s just too much.
Let’s talk about the packaging
The packaging for the MUFE Ultra HD Concealer is rare, but not really unique. It comes in a squeeze tube which contains 0.23 fl. oz. of product.
The applicator is the interesting part. It’s a little rounded nub with a tiny hole for the product to be dispensed through. Since it is rounded, I figured the purpose was for you to be able to have enough control to apply the product directly onto your face, rather than dispensing onto the back of your hand first.
Perhaps I’m just really uncoordinated, but I find this process cumbersome. I always either ended up with too much or too little product on my face. I could never get it to swipe on in even strokes like I can with a doe-foot applicator. I’m not a huge fan of this packaging.
On the plus side, this is probably one of the most hygienic ways to package concealer. Users won’t be sticking their fingers in a pot, nor will they be rubbing a tiny sponge on a stick all over the face and then shoving it back into the dark tube for bacteria to multiply. The tip is smooth and easy to clean.
But, as long as you don’t keep your concealer around past the expiration date, everything should be good, right? Right.
The texture is thin yet creamy
The top swatch is one swipe, which I pushed around with the applicator nub, and the bottom one is blended slightly with my finger.
Even though the top swatch is quite thick, my skin is still visible through it. I was under the impression MUFE Ultra HD Concealer would deliver better coverage than this, so I became a bit worried.
The second swatch blended into my skin beautifully. It does give that “invisible makeup” look that many are going for, especially if they are on 4K video. It feels velvety-smooth when you blend it into you skin, and it really does give a nearly invisible layer of coverage.
MUFE Ultra HD Concealer is scent free
There is no identifiable scent that I can detect. No artificial essence of cupcakes or flowerbeds, though there is a faint foundation-esque smell. It is nothing bothersome, and the scent doesn’t linger.
The wear test started off strong
On this day, I didn’t apply any liquid foundation as to not disrupt the texture or alter the concealer’s coverage. I wanted to see how it would act on its own. I applied the concealer on bare skin (no primer) under my eyes, down the bridge of my nose, in the center of my forehead, and a bit on my chin- all the usual spots. Then, I blended it in with my favorite fluffy concealer brush, and then set it with my usual under eye setting powder, the E.l.f. HD setting powder. I used a powder foundation for the rest of my face, and applied no other liquids besides the concealer.
Please excuse the messy mascara job, but besides that, the concealer looks great at the starting point. It blended into my skin beautifully, and my under eye area looks brightened without looking like I painted on a thick coat of makeup.
Unfortunately, a couple of hours later…
I honestly don’t know what happened. I didn’t add any extra product or powder, but the MUFE Ultra HD Concealer creased terribly. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this is simply not cute.
I’m quite oily, so products usually crease on my in an oily sort of way. This concealer totally dries out my under eyes and makes them look a way that they’ve never looked before. It’s strange.
What’s even stranger is the fact that the rest of the areas where I applied the concealer still looked perfect. Even in this extreme close up, where you can clearly see that my over-brow needs a wax, the concealer is still pretty invisible on my skin everywhere besides my under eye crinkles.
I thought, “This must be a fluke.” I tried again, and I had the same issue. I tried setting it with a different powder… Then another different powder…
I got a similar result every time. Bummer.
But the determination is real
I hate wasting products, so I am determined to use this thing somehow. Remember how beautiful it makes my skin look? Well, I decided to use it as my new no-makeup day go-to product.
It’s the product I’ve been using in my t-zone, around my nose, on redness on my chin, pretty much everywhere I want a bit of evening-out on days when I want to look like I’m wearing absolutely no makeup. Except in the under eyes, of course, I have, something else for that.
The pale color matches my skin almost perfectly, so I can get away with using it in random areas without having any base layer, and it doesn’t add any opposing texture either. (Just to clarify- the shade is too bright against the slightly deeper foundation I wear in order to match my face to my neck, but if I’m running with my pale face, then the shade matches well.)
I’m not returning, but I’m not repurchasing either.
I’d love to know what you think of the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer! Does it work for you? Are you afraid to try it now? Oops, sorry…

I enjoy the texture of the formula because it feels gel-like and cooling. It doesn’t last very long on my skin though. But I don’t mind too much and I just use it for short days.
I really love this product. The texture is so creamy and light and never feels heavy. I set it with Nars pressed powder and it doesn’t crease all day. 🙂

Hmm, I’ll definitely have to try that! Thanks for the idea, Heidi 🙂 xo
This product was super hyped like a year ago but no nobody talks about it anymore. What happened?
I really don’t know. I guess better things released and this one just didn’t stand up to the competition. Some products can really stand the test of time, but I guess this isn’t one of them. Thanks so much for reading! 🙂 xo
I had the same thing happen to me. so disappointing. Glad I’m not the only one who had problems with this concealer. :/
I guess not everything works for everyone 🙁 Thanks for reading xo
