Do you shy away from toners and think, nah, that’s too much effort.
I used to be one of those people. You couldn’t even get me to slap a moisturizer on my face, much less take the time to lovingly sweep on toner. To be honest, I just didn’t understand the benefits. And what we don’t understand, we turn away from. You know how it goes.
Imagine my surprise when I finally decided to learn about the benefits of daily toner use. Not to mention the benefits of good skincare in general. Basically, if you’ve got a skin issue, there’s a toner out there that can help!
Of course now you may be thinking, “But Kay, I’m not spending boatloads of money on a watery liquid that leaves my skin feeling pretty much the same!”
That’s where this post comes in! Who knew there are so many awesome toner options at the drugstore. Read on to see all of my favorite toners and product recommendations for all different skin types.
*UPDATED: New drugstore toners have been released since this post was originally published. In order to keep this info current and super helpful, I have changed some of my top drugstore toner picks to keep up with the times. I plan on updating consistently as new products release!
Thayers Witch Hazel Alcohol Free Toner Rose Petal // This toner is a great place to start for someone just starting out with a toner regimen. I always prefer alcohol-free formulas, even when my skin is feeling over-the-top oily. This formula is gentle and great for sensitive skin, and of course, beginners. A few swipes of this soothing toner is great for your skin’s everyday health, even if you don’t feel like you need it. Toners lift away impurities and tighten pores behind them, so I always recommend using one!

Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner // Glycolic acid is known for its exfoliating prowess. This is awesome of if you are prone to clogged pores and blackheads. It works so well at sloughing off dead skin cells, and that makes it a great pick if you deal with skin discoloration, fine lines and wrinkles, and acne scars! If your goal is to even out your skin tone and have an overall fresh-skinned look, this one is for you. I personally use this toner a couple of times per week, or when my skin is feeling especially “gunky.”
Botanics All Bright Micellar 3 In 1 Cleansing Solution // If you tend to shy away from toners because you have dry skin, then perhaps you can try this one. When my skin is feeling dry and tight, the last thing I want to do is use harsh cleansers. This micellar water gently cleanses your skin and reduces the amount of washing you need to do, and that’s great news for dry and irritated skin. It contains alpha hydroxy acid, which is said to help moisturize skin while removing dead skin cells. I suggest this one if you want to have a great foundation for dewy and luminous makeup looks.
Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel Pore Perfecting Toner // Witch hazel does a bunch of amazing things for your skin, although it doesn’t have the most attractive scent. I use unscented witch hazel sparingly when my skin is feeling especially sensitive and in need of a refresh. Sometimes my skin gets way out of balance, and I end up with dry, dead skin flaking off of otherwise extremely oily skin. Washing and harsh exfoliating only makes this situation worse. When this happens, I reach for this no-frills and no scent toner to help curb excess oil production and calm my skin down.
Pacifica Coconut Micellar Water Cleansing Tonic // For you natural product lovers out there, this toner is vegan and cruelty free, so you can feel great about using it! Even if you’ve got pretty normal skin, you can still benefit from using a toner daily. Pacifica makes gentle skincare products perfect for everyday maintenance. One year ago, I would have run far, far away from anything that says “hydrating,” but I am actually considering giving this one a go sometime soon.

Mario Badescu Keratoplast Cleansing Lotion // Oftentimes it’s the less mainstream products that turn out to be the best. I hadn’t heard about Keratoplast until a couple of months ago, and I was not disappointed when I finally tried it. Not sure about the age-defying part since I don’t have too many signs of aging just yet, but I do notice a difference in my skin’s overall clarity. My cheeks look less ruddy and patchy, dry sections feel smoother, and my pores appear less obvious. I feel like this toner performs best when your skin is feeling frustrated. You know the feeling– when your skin is irritated and scratchy and oily and stuffy, and basically everything bad. This product will help that.
That’s all for today!
