Trends are fun, no doubt. But wearable? That’s a different story.
Spring and summer outfits and trends are my favorite because they differ the most year to year. Every year we see different colors, textures, and styles, and I cannot contain myself! I don’t consider myself a trendy dresser in general, but I absolutely love the creativity that comes from pulling trend-based pieces into my wardrobe. I consider this evolving my personal style.
These are the spring and summer trends that I have taken notice of this year and will be adding to my everyday spring and summer outfits. If you skim through the images, you’ll notice that nothing looks outrageously “trendy.” I go for pieces that have a trendy element to them, yet are still pretty basic so that I can still weave them into my current outfits without looking dated once the trend ship has sailed.
All of the pieces featured are from Target, which means they are all super affordable and accessible.
EARTH TONES; BEIGE, BLUES & GREENS
Perhaps it’s the sudden realization that we had better wake up and care for our home planet, but earthy tones are especially trendy this season. Not that these colors ever truly go out of style. The ongoing trend of monochromatic outfits is really what makes this trend stand out. We used to think all-beige outfits looked blah, but this season they’re chic. I bet you can put one of these outfits together without purchasing any clothing at all. Now, let’s all go shop our closets.
My style >> I wear these colors all the time anyway because I consider them neutrals. However, I have never worn a head-to-toe beige outfit. That’s how I plan to take this trend from “regular everyday Kay” to on-trend.

UTILITARIAN
“Utility” clothing. It’s a difficult one to put your finger on, but I imagine it as items of clothing with features which a person working in a trade might appreciate. Think structured fabrics, plenty of pockets, more coverage for “protection,” and closures that make the piece easy to get in and out of.
My style >> This is another “trend” that is a staple in my everyday wardrobe. I don’t think I could pull off a boiler suit, (short legs, here,) but I have a newfound obsession with jumpsuits, and I plan to get one that is less flowy and more structured.

NEON GREEN & YELLOW
Spring and summer outfits always seem to include some sort of color, and the colors of the year are neon greens and yellows. I think these are totally wearable in small doses. If you’re wary, maybe go for a small accessory, or a more muted version of the color. You’ll still look like you’re on your fashion game, I promise.
My style >> Basically the two colors that I have avoided the most in my wardrobe for as long as I can remember. I don’t know what’s gotten into me, but I am actually very attracted to that citrine color. Admittedly, I am slightly afraid of wearing clothing in these colors. I plan on picking up an accessory or two to bring some spring and summer cheer into my outfits.

LACE
I don’t think lace has ever truly gone out of style, but this season I’m seeing it used more as an accent on garments rather than the primary fabric. This new take on lace is pretty and feminine without looking overdone. I can’t think of an occasion where a touch of lace wouldn’t improve your outfit.
My style >> All over lace isn’t my thing, save for especially special occasions. (I say this because you may or may not spot me wearing a lace dress at an event sometime soon.) Until recently, I was a real stickler for having my bra completely covered. Now, I’ve quite been enjoying peeking a lace bralette out from under a looser top.

IRREGULAR DOTS
They’re like polka dots, but with less second grade vibes. Think of them as the polka dot’s sophisticated older sister. This subtle pattern makes for a great starter pattern, if you aren’t well versed in patterns already. Most of the time it contains only two colors, one of which is a neutral, making is easy to build outfits around.
My style >> I tend to go for all over patterns when I do opt to wear them. That means jumpsuits, rompers, and dresses, instead of separates paired with a solid or *gasp* another pattern. Although, that midi skirt is really temping me.

PEARLS AND SHELLS
This goes perfectly with the “earthy” colors that are also in style. Too perfectly. They must have planned it this way. Natural is in, what can I say?
My style >> I live in Hawaii, so ocean jewels are pretty unexceptional around here. I never thought I’d be into it, but I am considering picking up a cute pair of shell earrings from a local jewelry creator to add to my collection. The texture of the shell alongside the irregular dots print would look cohesive and perfect.

VOLUMINOUS SLEEVES
Adding a top with voluminous sleeves is a great way to add something extra to your outfit without looking over the top. A top with wild sleeves but a streamlined fit along the body still looks super professional. This is one that I’ll probably be wearing forever. Trust me, I will figure out a way to keep it looking current because I love it that much.
My style >> I especially like voluminous sleeves because I’m not fond of my upper arms. Adding volume there makes my arms looks smaller by detracting attention from my flabbiness.

DENIM DRESSES AND JUMPSUITS
Denim used to mean just plain old jeans, but not anymore. Brands are getting so creative with their denim usage, and I love it. Granted, I have had at least one denim dress in my wardrobe at all times since high school, but I’m excited that the piece is actually “in fashion” now! Denim dresses are awesome because they give you the, ahem, airflow, that comes with wearing a dress but without the worries about your dress blowing up in the wind.
My style >> Denim dresses have been a staple in my wardrobe for years, but denim jumpsuits are new to me. I just purchased one recently, and I wear it everywhere. It is so comfortable.

VISIBLE CUTE SOCKS
Who knew socks could be a fashion trend? Yeah, I thought it was weird when I heard it, too. But think about it, we wear socks all the time anyway, and so it’s not like you’ll end up buying something obscure that you’ll never wear. And if you don’t feel comfortable wearing your crazy socks on full display, you can wear them just peeking out of your boots or pant legs, or even just wear them around the house. If they make you happy, then wear them. You’re what matters.
My style >> For me, wearing socks with cacti printed on them along with my “dad sneakers” would be a bit much. I like wearing them so they just peek out over the top of my lace-up combat boots. The juxtaposition of the cute socks with the badass boots is like my own personal inside joke as I walk down the street.

HAIR CLIPS/HEADBANDS/SCRUNCHIES
Hair accessories aren’t just for little girls anymore. Of course, there are much more sophisticated versions available for us grown-ups(ish.) The 90’s scrunchie is huge right now, as are dainty embellished bobby pins and headbands.
My style >> You may have noticed, but I’m really not into doing my hair. That means I need any help I can get. I’ve been known to use all of these and I’ve built up quite a collection. I plan on being an old lady with a scrunchie in her hair.

How to treat yourself to trends while staying under budget!
Okay, is there anything we loathe more than hearing the “So-and-So-Store” card pitch? I know I do, and that is exactly why I missed out for so long. I was rebellious. (Still am, actually.)
If you are going to sign up for one store card, make it the Target REDcard. I use my card to buy everything from household goods to groceries, and of course, cute & trendy clothes. I don’t feel as guilty treating myself knowing that I receive 5% off every purchase and I get free shipping on everything I order. Yup, even to Hawaii.
I have the debit card version, and that means I literally cannot go into debt using it. Yet I still get all the great benefits just like a credit card. For fashion lovers like me, I think the Target REDcard is a perfect fit.
