What’s new at the drugstore for Fall 2019?
So far I haven’t seen a ton of new releases, which is surprising. Maybe I’m just early in writing this post? These are the new-ish releases that I personally think look promising, and that I am interested to try.
As you may know, I have been on a minimalism journey in recent times. This basically means I have to be much choosier when it comes to purchasing new products. I’m not just going to gallop to Target and buy everything on the New! end-caps.
Each of the products I’ve selected here are there for a reason. I think each can solve a specific problem for me, or fill a vacancy in my makeup kit. Well, except for one product, but we’ll get to that one. Read on to find out about a few of the drugstore’s coolest new releases and what I think will be worthwhile purchases!
e.l.f. Jelly Pop Dew Primer
Admittedly, I fail when it comes to using primer. I have tried all kinds of primers, but I have never found one that works the kind of miracles I expect when I opt to spend money and time on yet another product in my routine. If I’m going to make the effort to wear primer, I want the primer to carry its weight. It had better make my skin look as smooth as a porcelain doll’s, control my oily t-zone, and latch onto my foundation like I latch on to Cheetoes.
E.l.f. says that Jelly Pop Dew Primer has a “gel texture that works like glue” which I find intriguing. One of my main issues with foundation is that it never stays put around my nose, especially where my glasses touch my face. I have high hopes that this will make my foundation stick to my face and not get pushed around.
e.l.f. Poreless Putty Primer
Putty… on your face? Sounds suffocating. I have the same concern, but I am interested in trying this product anyway. Chalk it up to the bandwagon effect. There have been so many comparisons to the Tatcha Silk Canvas Protective Primer, which is ahem, quite pricy. As I mentioned above, I want a primer that will control my oiliness and make my foundation stick without feeling too heavy.
Catrice Slim’Matic Ultra Precise Brow Pencil
I go through eyebrow pencils relatively quickly, which means two things. Number one, I get to try new options often without guilt trips from the minimalist half of my brain. And secondly, it means I am always on the prowl for the least expensive option, because there is no way I’m spending $21.00+ on brow pencils every three weeks. Whenever I spot a new slim brow pencil, my favorite, I’m all over it.
Covergirl Easy Breezy Volumizing Brow Gel
Recently, I’ve been going for a different eyebrow look. I used to draw on bold, highly contoured eyebrows, but these days I’ve been wanting more of a natural eyebrow look. I want them to look tidy, but not so polished that it looks like I spent all morning perfecting them. This brow gel has tiny fibers in it to give your eyebrows subtle volume, which means I can skip the pomade or pencil and still get a little boost. Now, if I can use only this sort of eyebrow product in my makeup routine, then that would be a minimalist win!
Milani Conceal + Perfect Longwear Concealer
I was so tempted to buy Milani’s Conceal + Perfect Foundation when I first laid eyes on it. But I talked myself out of it by reminding myself that I actually don’t enjoy wearing full coverage foundation. What I do enjoy, however, is having a super full coverage concealer on hand for spot-covering blemishes and eye bags when necessary. In a pinch, I’ve even been known to mix a touch of concealer with my daily moisturizer to smooth over any blotchiness without hauling out the foundation and beauty sponge. If this concealer is as great as I’ve heard the foundation is, then I might have a new drugstore holy grail on my hands.
Revlon Photoready Rose Glow Hydrating + Illuminating Primer
I love a good dewy skin makeup look, but that’s pretty difficult to achieve when you have inherently oily skin. Obviously, I don’t want to look like a greaseball, which means I need to pack on the powder and use mattifying face products.
My solution for a long time has been to apply a shiny primer all over my face before foundation. (I don’t mix the two because for me, mixing disturbs the effectiveness of the mattifying properties, which defeats the purpose.) Because of this extra layer of product, I am always on the lookout for lighter products so I can have that dewy effect without feeling like I’m walking around with a layer of pancake batter on my face.
Products served up in dropper bottles tend to be thinner consistencies, so I think this product will be a good option for me.
Maybelline Dream Urban Cover Flawless Coverage Foundation SPF 50
I have seen comparisons between this foundation and the It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream. I remember liking that foundation in the past, mainly because of the high SPF. I’m not sure why I stopped using it, but I’m not sure I want to spend nearly $40 for a product I may or may not use very often. If Maybelline Dream Urban Cover stays in place like the It Cosmetics did, then I think it’ll be my new choice foundation for higher coverage in the daytime.
Maybelline City Bronzer
While we’re on the topic of Maybelline, here’s the thing. I haven’t been the biggest fan of Maybelline’s powder products, but I know they have made massive improvements since I dismissed them back in 2017. I was obsessed with Benefit Hoola Bronzer for years, but I’ve recently found myself less enamored with the stuff. It’s nothing terrible, I just don’t think it’s as miraculous as I once thought it was. Something about Maybelline City Bronzer is drawing me in, and I’m going to trust my intuition on this one.
Pacifica Cosmic Reflect Hemp Infused Eyeshadows
Okay, so this is the product I mentioned earlier when I said each one of these products solves a specific problem for me. I don’t have a problem concerning lack of eyeshadows. The reason I am interested in this Pacifica eyeshadow palette is because to date, I have never tried eyeshadows from a natural brand. Eventually I would like to move toward using as many natural and ethical products as possible, and eyeshadows are a tough one for brands to get right. And also, I just really love the color selection. I think it gets the balance right between wearable shades and pops of color, making it great for everyday wear.
Thayers Lemon Blemish Stick
This last one isn’t a makeup product, but it directly affects your makeup look, so I think it counts. Right? I am mega grateful that I don’t have chronic acne. However, when I do sprout a breakout, it is noticeable. I swell easily, so every little irritation produces a significantly raised bump, which is just lovely.
I’m willing to try just about anything to get rid of spots quickly, before they grow into mini volcanos on my face. I’m even more inclined to try Thayers products because they are natural and cruelty free, and this one in particular includes witch hazel and tea tree oil. I trust these two substances in my daily routine already, so I have high hopes that this will be a great natural solution to a common problem.
