new drugstore makeup spring 2020
new drugstore makeup spring 2020
In 2020, I’m here for the good makeup.
In 2018, I was a VIB Rouge at Sephora, plus I owned basically all the makeup in the drugstore. Frankly, it felt overwhelming. And unsurprisingly, it did not make me feel any prettier.
In 2019, I didn’t purchase a single item of makeup. Instead I worked my way through all my bags and containers and drawers full of makeup. It was SO liberating when I finally hit pan on a powder or realized no more mascara was saturating the mascara wand, despite all the wiggling. That feeling is addictive and I want to keep it coming! Which is why, in 2020, I’ll only be purchasing makeup on an as-needed basis. When I run out of something, I will purchase a new one.
TBH, I attempted something like this a few years ago,. Hence, this blog post. It didn’t end up sticking that year, clearly. I’ve grown a lot since then, and I have a whole new perspective on my why when it comes to minimalism.
Of course, I still love makeup and find it fascinating and entertaining. You’ll be hard pressed to stop me from taking a spin through the makeup aisle in a drugstore. All of these items are things that I definitely would purchase when the time is right. I may not have tried everything on this list at the time of this writing, but they are on my watch list!
Let’s take a look at what I think are the best new drugstore makeup releases for Spring 2020!

Maybelline SuperStay Ink Crayon Lipstick
My favorite types of lip products are constantly rotating. Right now, I’m very into the chubby pencils. Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella has been in my bag for weeks and I can’t stop wearing it! Unfortunately, it’s not the most budget-friendly option. The Maybelline version comes in a similarly sized pencil, except that it’s a twist-up you don’t have to sharpen it! It may not be the newest product on this list, but it’s the one I’m most excited about. Hopefully it lives up to its potential.

Milani Cheek Kiss Blush
Another example of my tastes changing. I used to be pretty anti-cream product; everything had to be in powder form or I wouldn’t touch it. I had oily skin, so I required matte, matte, matte! Since my skin seems to be getting drier with age, and maybe I’m just becoming a bit more tolerant of the dewy look, I’m considering jumping into the liquid blush pool. I have to say, I am excited to try my very first liquid blush-in-a-tube.

Revlon Photoready Prime Plus Perfecting and Smoothing Primer
Ever since my minimalist journey began, it has translated into me wanting to wear a more natural and lightweight makeup style, as opposed to the no-skin-allowed look of years past. For that purpose, I am always on the lookout for products that will help my skin look better without covering it up. Primers are a perfect example of that. I think if you find the right one, you can actually wear less foundation, which is ultimately my makeup goal.

Milani Screen Queen Foundation
That being said, a girl still wants even-toned skin! A good foundation is a must for me, even if I want to wear as little of it as possible. What’s interesting about this new Milani Screen Queen foundation is that it claims to block blue light from your digital devices. We’ve all heard of blue light blocking eyeglasses, and here is the same gimmick for your face! I don’t actually know how damaging blue light is for your skin, but either way, I like blocking things out. I’ll give this gimmick a try.

ELF Liquid Glitter Eyeshadow
I don’t wear glittery eyeshadow often, but when I do, I like it quick, easy, and clean. I don’t want to worry about keeping makeup wipes nearby because I’ll need to mop the fallout off my face after applying my glitter eyeshadow. If there is one guilty pleasure makeup product I don’t mind collecting, it has to be metallic liquid eyeshadows. They are just so pretty and so easy to apply. Whenever I want to feel fancy, I can swipe on one of these and look like I spent hours on my makeup when I really only spent three minutes.

Wet N Wild Ultimate Brow Micro Brow Pencil
Every makeup brand and their mom-company now has a micro brow pencil. Even though I’ve been happily using up my Anastasia DipBrow for the time being, I still feel the need to point out every micro brow pencil release. Why? Who knows. But I do know that people still must be loving them if companies keep releasing them, so I will keep sharing the news!

Covergirl Exhibitionist All Day Lip Liner
Lip liner is something I have never used frequently. And frankly, the only time I’ve actually purchased a lip liner, it was so dry and terrible that I think I scarred myself for life. My goal is to create the look of defined lips without a heavy coat of lipstick. A lip liner will allow me to do that by lining my lips and then smudging inward. Covergirl has been through quite a rebrand over the last year, so I am excited to try this cruelty-free lip liner for myself.

Revlon Skin Lights Prismatic Highlighter
To be honest, I haven’t had the best of luck with drugstore highlighter. Or maybe it’s just that I haven’t purchased any of the good ones. I’m not in the market for a new drugstore highlighter just yet, but I am excited to see new options popping up that people are loving. Gives me shining hope for the future.

Maybelline The Hyper Easy Liquid Eyeliner
My minimalist makeup style has grown to include a simple strip of black liquid eyeliner, and perhaps a mini wing. This is one of the few things that I have added to my makeup routine rather than subtracted. I think it looks so clean and chic and not overdone. So far my favorite drugstore liquid eyeliner is the NYX Epic Ink Liner, but after having several tubes, I’m ready for a change. #committmentissues. The new Maybelline liner looks like precisely what I need.

Milani Ludicrous Lip Gloss
Why this lip gloss is “ludicrous,” I’m unsure. But what I am sure of is how long it has been since I’ve been into lip gloss. I’ve been a lipstick girl for the last 5 years, and I’m a bit out of touch in the lip gloss scene. I just want to look a little less dry, ok?!

Revlon ColorStay Browlights Pencil
I always intrigued by the innovative new brow products. There are the tried-and-true basics, which are basically the micro brow pencil Anastasia Brow Wiz copycats, and then there are the products that are trying to be interesting. Anybody remember that awful Maybelline chubby brow crayon? That didn’t work, but this pencil + highlighter + oval brush combo looks promising.
Milani Gilded Gold Eyeshadow Palette
I need a new eyeshadow palette like I need a new, well, anything. Newsflash, I don’t need anything. Yet here I am browser-window shopping anyway. I digress. Honestly, the thing that is attracting me to this palette is that deep green shade. I have no idea why, but I’ve just been so attracted to that color lately, much more than I’ve ever been attracted to a trendy” color. (Yes, I know it’s a trendy color.) As for the rest of the palette, I’d use all of those colors. Am I trying to justify this purchase? I sure am. Being a minimalist isn’t about buying and owning nothing. It’s about purchasing mindfully. Remember that, and you’ll be golden.
