Current fashion trends for 2020. Let’s get trendy!

button front detail tops
This year we’re seeing lots of tops with button details down the front. I’m thinking it started with the recent buttoned-up cardigan trend, and now it’s proliferating all sorts of tops. The trend works on many different styles of tops and dresses so I think it’s something everybody can wear!
straight leg jeans
Skinny jeans have been “in style” for the last 15 years and I’m pretty darn happy that their appeal is slipping away. Sure, it helped when they morphed into high-waisted skinny jeans, but who are we kidding? Skinnies aren’t comfortable. But these high-waisted and roomy-thighed beauties? I hope straight leg jeans stay in style forever because they are awesome.
flared & wide leg pants
What’s even better than straight leg jeans? Parachute pants, otherwise known as wide-leg pants. Sometimes they are built with stiff denim and sometimes they are comprised of other fabrics, but it doesn’t even matter because there’s just so much room to float around in there! Finally, we no longer need to suffocate our legs in the name of style. I like where fashion is headed.
canvas tote bags
Meanwhile, on the handbag front, anybody remember when the itsy bitsy teeny weenie handbags were fashionable? I do, and it was around the time when iPhones kept growing bigger and bigger. A new handbag trend has emerged, and it’s basically wearing your eco-friendly reusable grocery tote as a purse. It’s comfy, it’s cool, it carries everything, and it’s great for the planet.
lingerie inspired
Lingerie inspired, not lingerie. This trend can mean different things to different people. To me, lingerie inspired elements include sheer fabrics, satin and silk, and lace trims. I think these elements look super pretty and tasteful when applied in moderation. They really lighten up an outfit, making it look not so heavy. Perfect for wearing alone in spring and summer, and layering in fall and winter.
leather
Leather is another trend that started last year and is still going strong this year! But this year, we are starting to see leather used in different types of garments. It’s not just about the leather jacket anymore! This trend is the most out of my comfort zone, but I am definitely buying myself a couple of faux leather pieces this year. Side note, I really want a pair of perfect leather pants, but I also really want to avoid any “Ross Geller leather pants” moments!
puff sleeves & shoulders
I swear I’ve been wearing this one for years anyway. I’m just not huge fan of my arms, and puffy sleeves conceal them beautifully. I think it’s such a flattering look on so many people, and I plan on wearing the trend long past its expiration date. It’s called personal style 🙂
red & blue + natural tones
Colors this year are quite interesting.
This year, Pantone’s color of the year is classic blue. The selection seemed a bit boring when I first heard about it, but now I actually think it goes well with the climate of today’s society. It’s calming and goes well with the nature and neutral themed lifestyle trends, but it also pops enough to make a statement when necessary.
Of course, the eco-friendly and nature themed trends lend themselves to natural tones such as greens, olives, browns and beiges. Hello, canvas totes!
And finally, there seems to be a fair amount of red thrown in there. I don’t know where that came from, but hey, I like red.
