drugstore lipsticks
A new lipstick is the easiest way to change up your makeup, IMO.
And drugstore lipsticks are an even easier method. Why? Because the lower price points allow you to collect more varieties for the same (or less) money than the high-end options.
With other types of makeup products, we tend to search for a few options that work well for us and latch on to them. That explains why I’m still rotating the same two mascaras from 5 years ago. With lipsticks, we can be a lot more liberal with new options. We don’t expect a lipstick to last on our lips for an entire day anyway, so we might as well enjoy the color and feel on our lips.
Lipsticks are deeply personal, but these are my 10 personal favorite drugstore lipsticks that work well for what I like in a lipstick. I’ve got lipsticks for everyday wear, lipsticks for special occasions, and lipsticks for when my lips are having a meltdown and need serious TLC. Let’s get started!
*UPDATED: New drugstore lipsticks have been released since this post was originally published. In order to keep this info current and super helpful, I have changed some of my top drugstore lipstick picks to keep up with the times. I plan on updating consistently as new products are released!

L’Oreal Colour Riche Shine Lipstick
A balmy, moisturizing lipstick that gives a glossy and comfortable finish. The shade range and texture gives you the Glossier look without the corresponding price tag. Additionally, the packaging is also very elegantly styled and I just feel fancy using it. | ⇢ READ REVIEWS

L’Oreal Rouge Signature Lightweight Matte Lip Stain
Lip stains are unique products that are often misunderstood. They are meant to look as if your lips are just naturally the shade of the lip stain. This means the product itself is somewhat transparent like a pigmented gloss, yet it dries down like a matte liquid lipstick. If that sounds like something you’d like to experience, I suggest this one because it doesn’t dry out your lips, and the angled applicator makes precise application a breeze. | ⇢ READ REVIEWS

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Stick
This slim crayon-style stick is easy and precise to apply on-the-go. The formula isn’t overly drying and lasts several hours before needing to be reapplied. Also a plus: the cap snaps on securely so you won’t have to worry about the cap coming off and product getting everywhere and destroying the inside of your bag. | ⇢ READ REVIEWS

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid
I still love a good matte liquid lipstick. I don’t care that the trend is technically over. The Maybelline formula is thin and lightweight, and comes in a boatload of colors. It can be a bit drying, but that’s to be expected with these types of products. It’s my favorite lipstick for evenings out when I don’t want to worry about transfer or smudging. | ⇢ READ REVIEWS

Revlon ColorStay Satin Ink Liquid Lipstick
If the usual matte liquid lipsticks are too drying for you, but you still like the precision of an applicator, this formula from Revlon is a nice happy medium. The formula doesn’t completely dry down, leaving more of a traditional lipstick texture on the lips. The pointed applicator lets you place the product exactly where you want it for your perfect lip design. | ⇢ READ REVIEWS

Flower Beauty Petal Pout Lip Color
To be honest, there isn’t that much I can say about this drugstore lipstick that I haven’t said already. It’s moisturizing, comfortable, and comes in a pretty tube that makes me happy when I pull it out of my purse. What else can can you ask for? | ⇢ READ REVIEWS

NYX Matte Lipstick
This is my top choice for when I want my lips to look as matte as possible without going all-in with a liquid lipstick, which can sometimes feel uncomfortable. The lipstick feels a bit waxy in my opinion, which I like because it helps my lips feel smoother and less dry. | ⇢ READ REVIEWS

Milani Bold Color Statement Matte Lipstick
While matte is in the name, the texture of this lipstick is more neutral than a true matte. It leaves demi-matte look on the lips, but it never feels tight or makes your lips feel crusty. I think it is a happy medium between a super dry matte lipstick, and a balmy lipstick that swiftly wears off. | ⇢ READ REVIEWS

Revlon Super Lusterous Lipstick
It’s been around forever, and for good reason; it’s an everyday formula that you can’t go wrong with. It feels lightweight on your lips, almost like you have nothing but a simple balm on. I like it for days when I will be outside in the breeze but still have a specific look in mind. It’s not sticky at all so my hair doesn’t cling to my lips, and there are a ton of great colors. | ⇢ READ REVIEWS

L’Oreal Age Perfect Luminous Hydrating Lipstick
I’ve been attracted to everything moisturizing lately. The moisture center in the bullet makes the lipstick feel as comfortable as lip balm, unlike some other lipsticks that claim to be moisturizing, yet actually dry out your lips even more. The color is light on the first swipe, but can be built up for more opaque coverage. | ⇢ READ REVIEWS

HONORABLE MENTION: Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Stick
When I want just a hint of color to pair with a no-makeup look, Neutrogena is my favorite. These chubby crayons feel super comfortable on the lips. The color payoff is light, but I find that I can build it up, if I feel so inclined. My only issue is that the plastic cap doesn’t snap on tightly, so be aware of that then tossing it into your purse. | ⇢ READ REVIEWS

Hey Kay! Hope you are well. Glad to see you are writing, I was worried about you since I haven’t been seeing you on Instagram! Hope you are doing well despite the pandemic and everything going on. Miss you! Kara
Hey Kara! I’ve been doing ok, but I’ve been staying off social media because I realized it has been doing more harm than good in my life. So much going on, and all the noise has been getting to me recently. I’ve been just doing my daily thing, reading reputable information and tuning out opinions (definitely avoiding comment sections), and that’s been working well for me. Hope you are well! We’ll catch up on FB one of these days! 🙂
