Growing up, I hated my brown eyes. Turns out I just wasn’t styling them correctly. Today it’s all about makeup for brown eyes!
I was so jealous of people with blue eyes, green eyes, hazel eyes… basically anything except my boring brown eyes. I felt like no matter what I did, my eyes always just receded into my head, while those lucky people with blue eyes sparkled and shined and commanded attention wherever they went.
My brown eyes and I quickly grew tired of fading into the background, and so we decided to figure out how to stand out in our own right!
This is my list of 10 Ways to Make YOUR Brown Eyes Really Pop! We’re talking the best colors, application techniques, plus what not to do if you want your eyes to take center stage!
Let’s get started.
These are the *best* colors for brown eyes
Using complementary colors is a big part of making brown eyes stand out, but it isn’t everything. Of course, you can make any color work with a few application tips I’ll share later on in this post. For now, let’s talk about my favorite colors that make my brown eyes look awesome!

Tips for making brown eyes stand out
In addition to colors, there are a few things I like doing that help my brown eyes look bright and sultry at the same time. Try these techniques out for yourself!
Colorful winged eyeliner // Sometimes too much smokiness tends to drown out brown eyes and make them look one dimensional. Try lining your eyes with a fun colored eyeliner to capture attention! There are plenty of options in the way of liquid eyeliners and gel eyeliners, and you can even use a super pigmented eyeshadow with some setting spray.
Make the wing as dramatic as you’d like, or even just line your top lash line!
The great thing about this look is that you can make it work for just about any occasion. Go for a bright yellow or green eyeliner for fun days or nights out. For a more subdued work appropriate look, switch out you bright eyeliners for a deep navy blue or forest green. The barely-there color won’t draw too much attention, but it still brings out the best in your brown eyes.
Tarte Clay Pop Waterproof Liner in Cobalt >> [SEPHORA]
Get shimmery // I was obsessed with all-matte eye looks for a while there. But all that matte wasn’t doing my brown eyes any favors! Just a little bit of shimmer will make all the difference when it comes to making your brown eyes pop.
If you’re not into using shimmer all over the place, (or it’s just too much for where you’re going,) try this– Create a totally matte look, and then dab a similar shimmery shade just in the center of your eyelid. It’ll add a twinkle to your eye without sticking out like a sore thumb.
More lashes, less liner // You may notice that I’m not a big fan of eyeliner. I often wear either a colorful winged look or eyeshadow, usually not both. The last thing we want is to overwhelm our brown eyes so they disappear beneath a veil of heavy makeup.
Big, full lashes really open up your eyes instead of closing them off. Curl your lashes and apply a mascara that lifts, lengthens, and creates lots of volume.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara >> [ULTA] [SEPHORA]
Skip the rim of black all around // Which brings me to my next point, skip the heavy black eyeliner. Trust me, the smoky black rocker look was my jam back in high school. But then I realized my brown eyes were disappearing into the darkness. I line just my lower waterline for a bit of definition, but nothing more.
Bronze Eyeliner // Instead of smoky black eyeliner, go crazy with the bronze liner! The warm tones and golden sparkle in bronze shades really brings out the highlights in brown eyes. I definitely recommend investing in a good quality bronze eyeliner, and it will become your new everyday staple!
