A travel capsule wardrobe for a new kind of travel.
It’s no secret the plethora of travel restrictions these days. It makes us wonder if it’s worth it to travel with all the hoops that need jumping. But I’m still going to try.
This is what I’ll be wearing. Read on.
travel is looking different this year
I’ve become spoiled with expectations of big adventures for my annual “Congratulations, You Made It To The End Of The Year,” vacation. I pack clothes that are unlike anything I wear at home, because I going on an adventure. Except this year, I’m not going on an adventure. I’m currently trying to work out if I can even travel to my hometown, but all the red tape for for a trip even as simple as that feels daunting. Nonetheless, I’m still attempting to work it out. Which means, I’m already thinking about what I’ll wear. Important stuff, I tell you.
This is a long winded way of saying that this year’s holiday travels will be unlike any we’ve ever had. Whereas we would normally jet off to a far away land, this year we just might be heading to the family couches wearing face masks. And I have a capsule wardrobe for it.
an easygoing & comfy travel capsule wardrobe
This collection is exactly what I would pack for a holiday trip where I’ll be spending plenty of time just hanging out with family, possibly with a few family-friendly evenings out, too. Each item is very cozy and comfortable on its own, but can be combined in ways that give a more polished ensemble, when absolutely necessary.
You have over 90 possible outfit combinations with just these 14 clothing items. And the two pairs of shoes give an easy way to dress up or dress down each outfit!
On a practical level, this capsule will give you at least 9 days worth of outfits, and that’s if you only wear each top one time. For me, that’s enough clothes. Plus, being at home has its perks, i.e. no-hassle laundry.
first things first, let’s talk masks
No matter what you decide to wear on your holiday travels, there is one accessory that you won’t be going without. Please don’t make me say it again.
*whispers*masks*whispers*
I’m going off on a bit of a tangent here, but I cannot stand seeing the sheer number of people still wearing disposable masks. Disposable masks served their purpose months ago, back when most of us were baffled at the idea of wearing a mask at all, much less a cloth mask. If anyone you know is still polluting the planet by using those wasteful and unfashionable masks, please, please point them in the direction of reusable cloth masks.

TOPS
Green Henley || A cozy top the feels like tee, but offers a little something special that can be dressed up. Not to mention, I just love the deep green color, button details, and flattering neckline.
White Blouse || A loose-fitting white blouse that looks put-together, but isn’t in any way restricting. Eyelet styles with scalloped edges give a feminine look without the hassle of wearing actual lace. It’s not nearly as delicate and “snag-able.”
Printed Tee || T-shirts are always necessary. You could also use a solid color, but sometimes I like throwing a neutral pattern into the mix.
Black Long-Sleeve Tee || A good long-sleeve black tee can be worn untucked for a cozy-casual look, tied up at the waist for athleisure vibes, or tucked into trousers and accessorized like a blouse for evening.
Black Button-Up Shirt || The possibilities for a black button-up are endless. There’s no reason not to pack one, or two. Side note: If you ever come across a shirt that you can’t think of any way to wear besides paired with black leggings, then it’s not a good shirt. I’ve owned shirts that somehow looked bad even with basic jeans. How is that even possible? Those are not good shirts. Avoid them.
Plaid Flannel Shirt || Flannel shirts are so comfortable, but oftentimes the wild color combos are just too much for me. Gray toned flannels are the perfect solution for my neutrals-loving heart. The gray matches with all the other colors in my capsule, and isn’t relegated to being exclusively worn with black leggings.
Lightweight Turtleneck Sweater || I include this sweater in almost every capsule wardrobe because it it so beautiful and versatile. It’s comfortable, and the camel color instantly chic-ifies any outfit. Yes, even ripped jeans. Or a pair of inexpensive black yoga pants.
Mock-neck Sweatshirt || Sweatshirts are the epitome of comfort, but they can look somewhat frumpy. This one is slightly cropped and features a zipper detail to up the style factor.BOTTOMS
Boyfriend Jeans || Loose-fitting jeans are just better than tight jeans. Or worse, jeggings. 😱 There is a time and a place for tight pants. But for jeans worn on a holiday trip home, casual and free-flowing is the way to go.
Plaid Pants || An upgrade to black slacks or trousers. Good for dressier ensembles, or if you need a more business-casual look.
Dressy Joggers || Grab a pair of joggers made out of a non-sweat material. These bridge the gap between comfy pants and dressed-up pants.
Comfortable Joggers || These are literally my “airplane pants.” They are super soft, and they’re just the perfect weight. Not too lightweight where you feel cold and exposed, but not so heavy that it feels like your sweatpants want to suffocate and kill you. (Wow, that got dramatic.)
Black Leggings || An essential everywhere I go; pretty much as essential as underwear. Sometimes I workout in them, sometimes I take naps in them, and sometimes I wear them under my dresses with boots so my short legs look longer.
Tie-waist Dress || Nip in your waist when heading out for dressy outings, and then loosen the tie after dinner to actually enjoy yourself.SHOES
Neutral Sneakers || Walking is a part of any trip. Always pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes that matches the outfits you have planned. I think these go perfectly with this capsule because the cream color isn’t too paper white. It also features a little blue accent, and overall it looks more like street-wear instead of an athletic shoe.
Crocodile Print Leather Ankle Boots || Black ankle boots are my favorite everrr. They are a staple year round, everywhere I go. Recently I have been especially into the reptile print leather styles. Snakeskin, crocodile, you name it.what’s not included?
You may look at this travel capsule wardrobe and think, “Hmm, something is missing…” You’re right. This isn’t a complete packing guide. I didn’t include basics like underwear or pajamas, nor did I consider climate-specific items such as hats, gloves, or outerwear. All of those things are specific to your trip, and it would be too much for this post. Stay tuned for that.
