“Sweater Weather”— Does it get any better? I think not.
As you may know, I’ve been slowly making my way down the “do more with less” path. Whereas my past philosophy was that I needed tons of clothes in order to be stylish, (and let’s be honest, my still sucked,) these days I’m all about wearing just a few key items in a variety of different looks.
Today I’m styling one of my favorite “basic but not so basic” sweaters in two completely different ways. One is a more casual look, and one is more dressy, but they are both super comfy thanks to my favorite cozy sweater.
If you are in need of a few fresh ideas for styling your autumnal sweaters, then let’s get started!
My sweater weather favorites
Today I’m featuring a striped mock-neck sweater I purchased from American Eagle. This particular one is no longer available, but there are so many options out there, I know you’ll find just the right sweater for you!
My sweater is a basic mock-neck style that is super soft and slightly form fitting. The lightly contrasting stripes add a little extra interest to the piece, but still keep it looking neutral overall. I think it’s perfect.
Look for a sweater in a light neutral color. You can go super basic, or perhaps choose something with a little bit of flare. No wildly trendy silhouettes, super loud embellishments, or anything so “stylish” that it ceases to be functional.
I recommend light stripes (obviously,) cables in the knit, and fuzzy fabrics. These two make great options!

Make the looks your own
Remember, this isn’t about going out and buying the exact items I am wearing to create these looks. In fact, many of my specific items are from previous seasons and are no longer available.
I hope this look book inspires you to shop your own closet and create stylish looks that you may not have thought of!
Of course, I have added links to items shown when I can find them. In other cases, I have linked similar items that think are good substitutes.
Outfit #1 Casual Day Out
If you see catch me out on a breezy weekend in fall, this is probably what I’m wearing! I get major FOMO when I see people from colder climates rocking their fall favorites when it’s still 80+ degrees around here. I can pull off wearing a sweater, but pairing pants with it would just be too much. Not to mention, denim skirts are very on trend this season.
I accessorize my look with a basic ballet flat, perfect for slipping on and running out the door. A brown belt pairs perfectly with the cream sweater. (A cognac shade would look even better, but I don’t own one of those yet. It’s on my list!)
I’ve really gotten into handbags as of late, and I now realize how huge of a difference the right handbag can make. This look is the perfect blank palette just waiting to be spiced up with a cute bag. I’m wearing my new Tory Burch Fleming bag because I love giving my outfits a dressier vibe. If that’s not your thing, a studded bag would add a cool and edgy streetwear vibe to the look.
Finally, I added a long gold necklace for a little bit of sparkle to help break up the coverage of the sweater.

Outfit #2 Something Dressier
When I want to dress my sweater up a bit more, I reach for a pair of black pants and heels. I still want to be comfortable because not having room in your clothes for a food baby is no fun. For this look I’m rocking a pair of sleek jogger pants. These are stretchy, soft, and roomy, yet the material gives it a fancier feel. They feel like pajamas, but they don’t look like pajamas.
I enjoy stepping into my ankle booties whenever it’s just cool enough, but a pair of black strappy sandals would also look fabulous. Statement earrings are an amazingly easy way to elevate a look, and I think these are jus the right mix of elegant and subdued.
Since most of the look is pretty basic, I feel like this is the place to feature a statement handbag. I’ll be honest, I basically purchased this bag, because hello, Selena Gomez. But it’s gorgeous, isn’t it? I thought I would have such a difficult time wearing a red handbag, but it has proven surprisingly easy to style. It adds the perfect pop to this look!
